Flashback Friday: Minnie Riperton – “Loving You”

This post was prompted by an episode of Unsung on TVOne. Minnie, born Minnie Julia Riperton, was known for her unbelievably strong and powerful five octave range. She started off singing in her very own girl group called the Gems. She then moved on to backup singing. She sang backup to some notable greats like Muddy Waters, Etta James, Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry. Minnie’s claim to fame or first major hit was the iconic hit “Loving You” recorded in 1975. Sadly, the fanfare didn’t last long because in 1976 she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Once diagnosed; she was given 6 months to live. She didn’t let her prognosis stop her; she went on to record several more hits including Back Down Memory Lane & Lover and Friend over the next 3 years. Two years after being diagnosed; she went on to be the spokesperson for the American Cancer Society. In 1978 she was given the American Cancer Society Courage Award. She was invited to the White House so that then President, Jimmie Carter could present it to her personally. Minnie died one year later in her husband’s arms, surrounded by family, and close friend Stevie Wonder at the age of 31. Minnie was survived by her daughter, Maya Rudolph, son Marc Rudolph, and devoted husband Richard Rudolph.RIP

Maya is an actress and comedian; she was a regular on Saturday Night Live. Marc, received an ivy league degree and is a music engineer and works closely with his father Richard, in the music industry. Richard, composer, guitarist, musician, songwriter, and producer is the co-founder and co-owner (with Riperton’s estate) of Dickiebird Music, and has worked as musical director for numerous films. Richard who sometimes goes by Dick, also produced Teena Marie’s second album, “Lady T.” To my knowledge he has never remarried. They are doing well right?

Allen "Prince the Pimp" Brown
Allen ‘Prince’ Brown was serving an 18 year sentence for extortion and racketeering when he died from cancer at the age of 50.
You may recall the viral picture of Prince showing up to court baby haired to def last year. It was then he admitted that he used violence and drugs to control women and girls to force them into prostitution.
It was said if the girls he controlled did not make their daily quota of $500 for weeknight and $1,000 on weekend nights, they were not given the drugs that he made them addicted to, beaten or were not allowed into the house. It was also reported that he extorted a woman for $600,000 of her inheritance money and handcuffed a woman and forced her become addicted to heroin for not wanting to be one of his prostitutes. That’s just messed up. With all do respect, this dude was a horrible, horrible guy.
I guess even after all that he felt rehabilitated because he had planned to be a preacher when he was released from jail. With that said, RIP.

I’m loving how Chrissy and Ms. Jones are progressing. Tierra is a much needed positive force on that show. I love how she’s influencing Kimbella. She is definitely telling her much needed info and Kimbella seems to respect where it’s coming from. Tierra seems to be that sista-bestie type of chick. I’m not feeling that pud junk, but that’s their thing.
Video of Reed Jobs Surfaces….Wants to Save Others From Colon Cancer

Just when I start to lose hope for our youths; they go and do something like this:
During his senior year of high school Reed Jobs represented his school by appearing on a public access show called Quiz Kids. The video of the show has resurfaced a couple months ago. He used his mother’s maiden name Reed Powel, for obvious reasons. The video certainly shows that he is his father’s son. He has his brains and he is also the spitting image of his dad.
The Host of the show asked what he was working on for his senior project. Reed says, “we’re trying to find some new genes for colon cancer, which would signal for susceptibility to that disease.” It is then he also reveals that he will pursue a career in Oncology and it wasn’t just talk. Reed is 20 now and currently pursuing those studies at Standford University. He wants to save others from the disease that succumbed his father.
I personally think he may be just the man that can do it and I wish him the best trying.

Whispers: Zoe Saldana and Bradley Cooper Rumored to be Dating

Zoe Saldana and Bradley Cooper are rumored to be dating. The two wrapped up filming “The Words.” They are said to act just like brother and sister on the set. Well rumors are swirling that the two took the friendship further and are now in fact dating. Star is in fact saying that they were spotted “acting like two high school kids going steady” while hanging at a New York hot spot in September. This is really close to the time she announced that she and her fiance had broken up. I’ll still keep this filed under straight gossip for the time being, because we haven’t seen any real concrete evidence that the two are really dating. The picture above is from the set of their upcoming flick.

(WOOD) – Police are currently aware of the identity of only one of the victims who they say a man intentionally infected with HIV. “He’s charming,” the alleged victim — who didn’t want to be identified — said of suspect David Smith, “He’s very charming.” Smith, 51, was arrested last week after he went to police. Authorities said Smith told them that he intentionally had sex with as many people as he could over the past three years. He said his plan was to infect them with HIV, which was meant to kill them, court records show. The victim 24 Hour News 8 spoke with is the only victim that Smith has been charged with infecting so far. ”

Deion Sanders‘ daughter Deiondra lashed out hard at Pilar on twitter today. She accuses her of all kinds of stuff. It sounds like she is saying that Pilar dated Westley Snipes and Johnny Mitchell before Deion and told her now she could catch back up with them. She calls her a gold diggin h*e. She says Pilar wouldn’t allow her to take her little sister out for her birthday. Her and Deion Jr. weren’t allowed over sometimes. She’s fighting the prenup. I really don’t see how men buckle and let their new wives alienate their spawn like that. They can’t come over unless Deion is there? WTH? Deiondra has a lot of heart and I can certainly relate to having to watch some sneaky, lowdown arse shyt go down constantly. She probably has been holding that stuff in for years. Parody, “Sh*t Black Girls Say” Goes Viral With 1.2 Million Views

Sh*t Black Girls Say by Billy Sorrels has gone viral with over 1.2 million views. A original parody was done by Kyle Humphrey & Graydon Sheppard. Now everybody has jumped on the bandwagon and are making their own versions. I’ve seen Sh*t Guys Say, Sh*t Black Guys Say, Sh*t Black Gays Say and the list goes on. Then I saw a few that I just didn’t like. Not because they were offensive, but they just weren’t funny. Anywho, I know I may be late to some, but some may be just as behind as I am. Just check it out if you haven’t already done so. HILARIOUS!!!!
