Jay Z’s 40/40 Club Faces “C” Grade After a Failed Health Inspection (Broken Refrigerator Partly Responsible)

Jay-Z’s 40/40 Club was shut down for a number of health-code violations just a day after its $10 million Grand Reopening.  The New York Post reports that the club now faces a “C” grade.

An inspector found perishable food at dangerously warm temperatures inside the walk-in refrigerator and discovered “hot” food left out on the counter on Thursday.

A worker was also seen mixing salsa with his bare hands.  Now that’s just nasty.  I would consider this dude unemployed right now.

The refrigerator was at a ridiculous 60* degrees instead of the protocol of 41*. There was 50 pounds of raw chicken wings, five pounds of raw shrimp and 100 turkey burgers inside that refrigerator.  That could make people really sick and could cost the Jigga man a lot of change.

Health inspectors also found five pounds of cooked mashed potatoes left out at a temperature of 89 degrees.  There was also 10 pounds of cooked rice and 50 turkey burgers were kept at 67 degrees.  All hot food should be kept at a constant 140* to avoid spoling and food-borne illnesses.

The club’s restaurant was immediately closed, and new patrons were barred from entering. Those already inside were allowed to remain.

The nightspot corrected the problem and was cleared for business last night.

Ron Berkowitz, a spokesman for the club, insisted there “was no interruption in service or sales.”

However, problems could be looming for 40/40. The inspector gave the club 69 violation points, far in excess of the 28 needed for a worst-possible “C” grade, and they’ll be adjudicated at a hearing next month.

During its last inspection, in March, before the facelift, the club racked up 39 violation points for problems including improperly handled food and unsanitary conditions.

I bet there is steam coming out of Jigga’s ears right now.  One thing I do know is that you don’t mess with a man’s money or his good name.  No doubt someone will be held responsible for this debacle.  Surely,  Jigga definitely ain’t walking around a kitchen looking for inspection issues, he hires someone for that, and that person has some splannin’ to do.  No one wants a “C” grade attached to their establishment…… ever.

Update: Broken down refrigerator is blames for the dangerously high temps in the walk-in.  TMZ  explains the following:

Ron Berkowitz, a rep for the 40/40 Club, tells TMZ the motor in one of the refrigerators blew just moments before the health inspector arrived … causing the temperature in the fridge to rise.  Berkowtiz says the staff identified the problem immediately and had no intention of serving the food from that fridge.

Berkowitz says the fridge was fixed by noon the next day and the club was permitted to re-open.

He adds … the club lost no business as a result of the issue and their health code grade is currently pending review.
