Whispers: Erykah Badu Banned in Malaysia

Posted February 28, 2012 10:17 PM By Deirdre B Pride

Erykah Badu has been banned from performing in Malaysia.  Why you ask?  A picture of Erykah with temporary tattoos of the word Allah on her bare shoulders in Arabic was seen by the people of Malaysia. Since Malaysia is a mostly Muslim nation, the photo started an outcry from the Muslim community.  Muslim groups felt that Erykah was not a suitable role model for young Malaysians.  With that said, a government committee that includes police and Islamic policy officials decided to forbid her show

In a statement, Minister Rais Yatim said, the body art was “an insult to Islam and a very serious offense. It triggered public criticism that could jeopardize national security and cause a negative impact to the government’s image.”

Unfortunately, Erykah has already made the trip to Malaysia.    She’s okay for her to be there as a guest, but she will not be allowed to perform.  Razman Razali, managing director of the show’s Malaysian organizer, Pineapple Concerts, said his company hopes the ban will be reversed.
Erykah is “worried and dismayed”, Razman said. She was slated to perform in an auditorium that can hold about 3000 spectators.

The photograph of Badu, which also appears on her official fan website, attracted attention after Malaysia’s most widely read English-language daily, The Star, published it Monday.  Yesterday, the same newspaper apologized to Muslims for what it called an “oversight”, saying it deeply regretted any offense sparked by the photo, which was “inadvertently published”. The Home Ministry summoned The Star’s editors to explain the photograph, which caused some Muslim activists to demand the newspaper’s suspension.

That was pretty deep.  Hopefully they’ll get the situation rectified by tomorrow’s concert time.

Legal Whispers: Gil Scott Heron’s Family Fighting Over His Estate

Posted February 28, 2012 4:47 PM By Deirdre B Pride

Best known for his song “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,” the late Gil Scott-Heron left four children to fight over who should administer his estate and market his music and poetry.  Gil’s son, Rumal Rackley, accused a half-sister, her mother and her grandmother of taking more than $250,000 from Scott-Heron’s business accounts after he died.  Rackley, the temporary administrator of his father’s estate, claimed in court papers that their withdrawals were “unauthorized and unlawful.”

He accused Gil’s daughter, Gia Scott-Heron, by his former wife, actress Brenda Sykes, of forging her father’s signature on bank forms at Chase to get control of the accounts that had been set up to accept royalty payments.  Rumal also charged that Brenda’s mother, Elvira Sykes, illegally used a power of attorney document to move money from those two accounts to a third account.  Rumal claims that the money was put back into the two business accounts in early November and then withdrawn entirely, just a few weeks before the Surrogate Court chose Rumal over his sisters to temporarily administer the estate.  *Shysty*

Rumal, who has also accused Elvira Sykes of looting $60,000 from Scott-Heron’s personal checking account after he died, is suing both the Los Angeles-based Sykes women and Chase to recoup the money lost — plus $2 million in damages.Elvira Sykes said they’re no thieves. “I don’t need the money,” she said. “There is no reason for me to take that money. I wouldn’t be that dumb. Chase wouldn’t be that dumb. And Ramal shouldn’t be that dumb.” *shots fired*

Elvira Sykes said was given Scott-Heron’s power of attorney after he was jailed in 2001 for cocaine possession. He was paroled two years later. “He (Scott-Heron) was like a son to me,” she insisted.  However, she added, there were other signatories on Scott-Heron’s accounts and they might have made the illegal withdrawals after he died.  In all, Gil fathered Rumal, Gia, Raquiyah Kelly Heron and Chegianna Newton.

This is just bad.  How much you wanna bet that he wasn’t even speaking to or dealing with some that are involved?   This should be an example for us all to to get formalities in order and up to date.  It’s kind of messed up that sometimes people change their minds and don’t get a chance to change things.

In what would be his first series-regular gig, Cuba Gooding Jr is set as the lead in Fox’s legal drama pilot Guilty, from Marc Guggenheim and Greg Berlanti. The project, written by Guggenheim and to be directed by McG, centers on William “Billy” Remz (Gooding), a brilliant, morally questionable defense attorney who, after being falsely convicted of fraud and stripped of his legal license, uses his unorthodox methods to solve the cases he’s been prohibited from handling … and to exact revenge on those who set him up. Guggenheim, Berlanti, McG and Peter Johnson executive produce the pilot for Warner Bros TV. While broadcast networks very rarely cast black actors as the leads of drama series, this pilot season we have two such projects – Guilty and ABC’s Last Resort, toplined by Andre Braugher. Additionally, Kerry Washington plays the lead in ABC’s upcoming midseason drama series Scandal. Gooding Jr, best known for his Oscar-winning turn in Jerry Maguire, recently co-starred in George Lucas’ Red Tails.
