Behind The Music Remastered

This is the updated story of the three girl Atlanta-based band whose explicit lyrics encouraged young women to take charge of their own lives. They became the biggest selling female band in the world. Today also happens to be the tenth anniversary of Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes’ death. The remaining members Chili and T-Boz sat down with Essence to reflect on the past 20 years and also talk about a their upcoming tour.

ESSENCE.com got the opportunity to chat with Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas as they reflect on the life of their fallen group member.

ESSENCE.com: Today marks 10 years since we lost Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes in a tragic car accident. What do you remember about that day?
T-BOZ: She died a day before my birthday. I remember everything. I was with security in my Porsche and I said to them, “I feel like I’m going to get in a wreck and I want to go home.” The driver said: “Well, that’s on the other side of town.” I didn’t care; I wanted to go home. I just felt something was going to happen to me, but it wasn’t me — it was Lisa. I was sitting in a rocking chair in my daughter’s room after putting her down when I got a call from Chilli. She was screaming. I had just gotten out the hospital from fighting sickle cell so I had to be careful about getting upset. Everybody was trying to keep me calm.

I remember staying up all night and Patti Labelle and Missy Elliot calling me. Whitney Houston was at Lisa’s funeral. She sat behind me and rubbed my shoulders for two hours, while telling me, “It’s going to be okay, it’s going to be all right.” Right before that, I remember Lisa played a trick where she went missing and nobody knew where she was. This was the one time I wish she was joking and doing one of her stunts, but she wasn’t.

ESSENCE.com: People playfully identified her as the crazy one in the group because of the notable fire in 1994, among other things. What’s the biggest misconception about Left Eye?
CHILLI: People didn’t understand how much of a heart she really had and how passionate and giving she was. She might have come across as someone who wanted to start trouble all the time, but that wasn’t it; she just had a lot to say. Sometimes when you speak what’s on your mind — I’m talking everything on your mind, and people can get a misconception of you. So because she spoke her mind, all of the time, it caused people to misjudge her.

ESSENCE.com: Are we going to get another TLC album or a 20th anniversary tour?
T-BOZ: Yes, we’re going on tour; we are in negotiations now with LA. Reid, so we’ll see what happens. A lot of cool things are coming up.
CHILLI: Another TLC album? Yes, that’s for sure! We’ll have new music right after the movie drops. We have everybody that was there with us from the beginning on board. We’ll definitely have a tour; I just don’t know what we’ll call it yet.

Gone But Not Forgotten Redd Foxx

John Elroy Sanford was born in St. Louis, Missouri and raised in Chicago on the South Side. His mother was half Seminole. His father, an electrician, left his family when he was four years old. Redd was raised by his mother, his minister, and his grandmother. He briefly attended DuSable High School.

John was known”Chicago Red, the funniest dishwasher on this earth.” Redd earned the nickname due to his reddish hair and complexion. His stage surname was taken from baseball star Jimmie Foxx. During World War II, Redd dodged the draft by eating half a bar of soap before his physical, a trick that resulted in heart palpitations.

Redd Foxx was the stage name of John Elroy Sanford, an American comedian and actor best known for his role in the 1970s sitcom Sanford and Son. His stand-up comedy routines were considered too racy for white audiences. He performed on the “chitlin circuit” of black nightclubs during the 1940s and 50s.

The “Chitlin’ Circuit” is the collective name given to the string of performance venues throughout the eastern and southern United States that were safe and acceptable for black musicians, comedians, and other entertainers to perform during the age of racial segregation in the United States (from at least the early 19th century through the 1960s) as well as the venues that contemporary black soul and blues performers, especially in the South, continue to appear at regularly.

Redd gained notoriety with his raunchy  nightclub act His big break came after singer Dinah Washington insisted that Foxx come to Los Angeles, where Dootsie Williams of Dootone records caught his act at the Brass Rail nightclub. He was signed to a long term contract and released a series of comedy albums that quickly became cult favorites.

He was also one of the first black comics to play to white audiences on the Las Vegas Strip. Redd used his starring role on Sanford and Son to help get jobs for his friends such as LaWanda Page, Slappy White, Gregory Sierra, Don Bexley, Leroy Daniels, Ernest Mayhand and Noriyuki “Pat” Morita.

January 16, 2012 marks the 26th anniversary of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. observed holiday. Yesterday, January 15, would have marked his 83rd birthday. Today while we are enjoying the day off in Dr. King’s honor, take the time to remember what made him great, why he remains an inspiration for all of us, and what he stood for. I made the following collages to reflect on his family and to reflect on his leadership and his fight for equal rights.  The things that were most important to Dr. King.  Enjoy!!

If anyone would like any of the collages just send me an email they are actually larges than they appear here.  This was actually suppose to go out at 9am with the other posts.  I didn’t set the schedule correctly.

Source: The brown colored King monument was found on yahoo and I believe it was done by Dr. Bliss.  Love it.  I think the actual monument would look cool the same color.

This post was prompted by an episode of Unsung on TVOne.  Minnie, born Minnie Julia Riperton, was known for her unbelievably strong and powerful five octave range.  She started off singing in her very own girl group called the Gems.  She then moved on to backup singing.  She sang backup to some notable greats like Muddy Waters, Etta James, Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry.  Minnie’s claim to fame or first major hit was the iconic hit “Loving You” recorded in 1975.   Sadly, the fanfare didn’t last long because in 1976 she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Once diagnosed; she was given 6 months to live.  She didn’t let her prognosis stop her; she went on to record several more hits including Back Down Memory Lane & Lover and Friend over the next 3 years.  Two years after being diagnosed; she went on to be the spokesperson for the American Cancer Society. In 1978 she was given the American Cancer Society Courage Award.  She was invited to the White House so that then President, Jimmie Carter could present it to her personally. Minnie died one year later in her husband’s arms, surrounded by family, and close friend Stevie Wonder at the age of 31.  Minnie was survived by her daughter, Maya Rudolph, son Marc Rudolph, and devoted husband Richard Rudolph.RIP

Minnie’s Family Now

Maya is an actress and comedian; she was a regular on Saturday Night Live.  Marc, received an ivy league degree and is a music engineer and works closely with his father Richard, in the music industry.  Richard, composer, guitarist, musician, songwriter, and producer is the co-founder and co-owner (with Riperton’s estate) of Dickiebird Music, and has worked as musical director for numerous films.  Richard who sometimes goes by Dick, also produced Teena Marie’s second album, “Lady T.”  To my knowledge he has never remarried. They are doing well right?

You can read her biography here or on Wikipedia.  This is one of several facebook pages dedicated to Minnie  That happened to be the best one.

The videos below are actually the full episode broken up into six videos.

In my quest to find a little something different and positive, I decided to do a “Gone, But Not Forgotten” post each month or week.  I haven’t decided yet.

{Michelle with some of her co-stars}

During the last season of Family Matters her Cancer grew worse making it harder for her to do her scences after the show ended In 1998 the Lemon Sized Tumor was removed and she was recovered. In August of 1998 Michelle  landed a starring role as Callie Rogers on “The Young And The Restless”.
In October of 1998 she was emergency rushed to the hospital due to a new ruptured Tumor in her Stomach.
