Magic Johnson buys Dodgers

Magic Johnson and Stan Kasten bought the Dodgers from Frank McCourt for a record breaking $2 billion.  That price supersedes any price paid for for any American franchise team.  The highest price paid for a team before now was $1.1 billion.  Stephen Ross paid $1.1 billion for the NFL’s Miami Dolphins in 2009.  Serena and Venus Williams are part owners of the Dolphins.  #mogulmoves!

“I am thrilled to be part of the historic Dodger franchise and intend to build on the fantastic foundation laid by Frank McCourt as we drive the Dodgers back to the front page of the sports section in our wonderful community of Los Angeles,” Magic said in a statement.

As part of the agreement, the Dodgers said McCourt and “certain affiliates of the purchasers” would acquire the land surrounding Dodger Stadium, including its parking lots, for $150 million.

“If they invested that much money, I’m sure they’ll invest to get us a winner,” said Tommy Lasorda, the Dodgers’ retired Hall of Fame manager. “I wish them all the luck, and I admire them. I know both of them. I know Magic from the day he came into Los Angeles as a basketball player for the Lakers.”

“I am truly honored to have partnered with such talented individuals and to be associated with the Dodgers organization,” Walter said. “We look forward to building upon the legacy of the Dodgers and providing long-term stability to one of the most revered franchises in baseball.”

The Dodgers have won six World Series titles but none since 1988, when they were still owned by the O’Malley family that moved the team from Brooklyn to California after the 1957 season. Fox bought the team in 1998, then sold it to McCourt.“It’s time to turn the page and move toward a new chapter in the history of the Los Angeles Dodgers,” he said.

Queen Latifah

Lifetime has assembled the cast of its Steel Magnolias reboot. Queen Latifah has signed on to star in and executive produce the original movie, an updated, contemporary TV adaptation of the play and 1989 film. She is joined on the all-black cast by Alfre Woodard, Phylicia Rashad, Jill Scott, Adepero Oduye and Rashad’s daughter, Condola Rashad.

Produced by Sony Pictures Television, Steel Magnolias chronicles the lives and friendship of six women in Louisiana: M’Lynn (Queen Latifah), Ouiser (Woodard), Clairee (Phylicia Rashad), Truvy (Scott), Annelle (Oduye) and Shelby (Condola Rashad). Supporting each other through their triumphs and tragedies, they congregate at Truvy’s beauty shop to ponder the mysteries of life and death, husbands and children — and hair and nails — all the important topics that bring women together. In the 1989 movie, the roles were played by Sally Field (M’Lynn), Dolly Parton (Truvy), Shirley MacLaine (Ouiser), Darryl Hannah (Annelle), Olympia Dukakis (Clairee), and Julia Roberts (Shelby).

The remake, which is slated to begin production next month in Atlanta for a debut later this year, will be executive produced by Craig Zadan, Neil Meron, Latifah, her producing partner Shakim Compere and Shelby Stone. Kenny Leon, who previously helmed ABC’s TV adaptation of the play A Raisin In The Sun – also from Sony TV, Zadan and Meron — is directing from a script by Sally Robinson (Iron Jawed Angels) based on the play and feature screenplay by Robert Harling. “The caliber of talent associated with this film is astounding and falls in line with our strategy to make Lifetime a first stop for the industry’s best both in front of and behind the camera,” said Lifetime’s president and general manager Nancy Dubuc. “Queen Latifah, Phylicia, Alfre, Jill, Adepero and Condola are some of the most celebrated women in music, film, television and stage.

Is It Time For “Queen Latifah” to Ditch Her Rap Moniker?

With Queen Latifah making these major mogul moves, don’t you think it’s time she roll with Dana Owens?  I think she needs to make her grown woman steeze complete by ditching the rap name.  Dana has just announced she will be leading the cast of the brown version of the “Steel Magnolias.”  Along side her will be Phylicia Rashad and Alfre Woodard.  Am I correct to assume that these ladies of distinction will be walking around the set calling her Queen?  It’s just time, it really is…..with all due repect.  What do you think? Maybe you know something I don’t know.

Well it didn’t take long for this superwoman to get back to bizness.  Beyonce didn’t waste anytime getting into her new role of mommy moguldum.  She has just revealed a collaboration with Revel Resort’s Memorial Day Weekend kick off party  in Atlantic City, NJ.  Bumble B will play a trio of exclusive shows to help launch the $2.4 billion Revel entertainment center on May 25, 26 and 27. On Jan. 26, 2012, an application to trademark the name “Blue Ivy Carter,” was made in NYC by Sean and Beyonce Carter.  This after two companies attempted to trademark Blue’s name without the Carter’s consent.

Clothing designer Joseph Mbeh filed to trademark “Blue Ivy Carter NYC,” but he was understandably denied.  I would have never thought anyone would have the audacity to do such a thing.  Folks are all over the place trying to corner the market on someone else’s baby.

Designer, Joseph Mbeh attempted to defend his actions by saying, “I’m a business man. I was trying to foster a relationship with them, not capitalize on their daughter,” Mbeh told the Daily News Thursday. “We’re big fans of them, and we were shocked they didn’t immediately protect the name. We were trying to get the trademark for them before someone else did, with the possibility of doing business with them.”

He said his company already “ghost designs” for lots of famous brands, and bad press surrounding his filing caught him off guard.” They’re new parents, and I could just imagine how they felt getting the information in the press. We don’t need bad energy around us, it wasn’t our goal.”  Ummmm yeah, quit playing.  I don’t believe you.

Any who….. Another company allegedly tried to exploit Blue and the Carters by attempting to trademark “Blue Ivy Carter Glory IV.”    That company, CBH filed and was also denied.  They wanted to use her name for cosmetics, bubble bath and pet smell good. Unbelievable right?

That company has the audacity to try to convey that, “Blue Ivy Carter (is) a famous infant whose parents are singer Beyonce and rap artist Jay-Z,” the denial letter sent Feb. 2 said. “Thus there will be a presumption, though incorrect, that a line of cosmetics bearing the name Blue Ivy Carter is connected with the child.”  Who do they think they are kidding?

Blue’s parents, stepped into protection mode and have asked for exclusive rights to use the name in connection with cosmetics, recordings, baby products, clothing, toys, video games and motion picture films, according to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office website.

This child is a force to be recon with already……

Let me go in to my own protection mode to say the accusations are purely my opinion from the facts set forth.

Diddy-w04

Sean P’ Diddy Combs  is  launching a music and lifestyle cable network later this year.  The network channel will be called “Revolt”

Broadcasting and Cable magazine reported that the channel will have an urban vibe, and feel like an old-style MTV for African-American viewers.

This what I am talking about.  This will create much needed jobs for a lot of people.  Think about it…from the mail-room to the boardroom.  If you want some of that potential; I would think you would need to start half past last year. Get your networking game on NOW, but I digress.

Any who, Andy Schuon, who previously held the position of programming chief  for MTV, will be on board for the whole project.  Comcast is the first cable channel on board for the whole thing.  Comcast has an ongoing endeavor to launch minority owned networks, so this will be a great fit. Two more African American networks on par to launch as well.

Having a cable network is certainly major. No other AA individual has done this since Oprah.  At least I can’t think of any others.  Diddy’s conglomerate has just reached monumental proportions, to say the least.  People involved in the project are looking at an end of 2012 launch.

This inspired a new whisper: Mogul Whispers.  This was way too big for a mere new gig whisper.
