Legal Whispers: Spike Lee Sued Over George Zimmerman Tweet
month after the death of Trayvon Martin, Spike Lee took to Twitter and erroneously retweeted what he thought was the home address of George Zimmerman. The address actually belonged to an elderly couple by the name of Elaine and David McClain . That couple is now suing Spike over that tweet. He sat down with Oprah and called his actions “stoopid” and said he spoke with the couple and apologized. There was also a $10,000 settlement. Now The Smoking Gun reports the couple want more. They have filed a lawsuit that is valued at $1.2 million.
The McClains claim they’ve continued to receive hate mail, threatening email and an inflated media presence outside their home from people who didn’t get the update that Spike’s tweet was erroneous.
The lawsuit states, “As the legal, proximate and direct result of Defendant’s negligence, gross negligence, recklessness, conscious indifference, and/or willfulness, plaintiffs were required to temporarily relocate.”
